File Format Guidelines

Images

  • Any images with dimensions greater than 1920 x 1080 will be scaled down to fit within those dimensions.
    • Aspect ratio is retained
  • JPG / JPEG
    • No special restrictions
  • PNG
    • Automatically converted to JPG if filesize is over 2 MB.
  • TIFF
    • Automatically converted to JPG.
  • GIF
    • Automatically converted to WEBM.
    • Transparency is retained.

Video

  • Video files have a 500MB file size limit. Since videos download asynchronously as they play, a user does not have to download it all before they can begin interacting. So large files are ok.
  • If your file is over 500MB, you should run it throughΒ HandbrakeΒ and export as web-optimized MP4.
  • Any video with dimensions greater than 1920 x 1080 will be scaled down to fit within those dimensions.
    • Aspect ratio is retained
  • MP4, MOV, M4V
    • No additional restrictions

Audio

  • MP3, WAV, AIF, M4A
    • No special restrictions.
    • All audio is converted to 128kbps mp3.

3D

  • File size is critial for 3D models.Β The user must download the entire file before they can enter the gallery, so files in the range of 10MB or smaller are optimal.
  • If you are using multiple 3D models, you must consider that the combined file size of all models must be downloaded before the user can enter the gallery.
  • All 3D models should as low-poly as possible. Anything over 10,000 polygons becomes difficult to render in the gallery while maintaining smooth frame rates.
  • Here is a tutorial on how to decimate models in Blender:Β https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqoIGxUrLbw
  • GLB or GLTF
    • Preferred file type
  • OBJ
    • Automatically converted to GLB

Documents

  • PDF
    • Represented as an image in the gallery.
    • Opens full PDF in a new tab when clicked.
    • Not downloaded until clicked by the visitor, so large PDFs don't affect load time.
