New Art City - At a Glance

Mission

New Art City’s mission is to develop an accessible toolkit for building web-based virtual installations that show born-digital artifacts alongside digitized works of traditional media. Our curation and product design prioritize those who are disadvantaged by structural injustice. Cultivating an inclusive and redistributive community is as important to our project as the tool itself.

With over 100 exhibitions launched to date, New Art City empowers nontechnical people to launch virtual exhibitions with unparalleled speed. We believe this has the potential to expand the board of cultural production to incorporate the profusion of digital art works in a format that suits the medium.

We support individual artists and curators to realize their work virtually, and we are hired by internationally recognized institutions to strategize and execute their entry into virtual space.

It's a Toolkit, Not A Platform

We reject platform capitalism and refuse to turn our users into products for a secondary market. We provide a set of tools that make it easy to build for the 3D web, and unlike platforms whose core goal must be user acquisition, we are focused on building a community that grows with the tool, not getting big fast.

Key Features

  • Launch 3D multiplayer virtual spaces without code, that run on desktop browsers and mobile phones
  • Upload and display audio, video, images, and 3D shapes seamlessly in 3D space
  • Position art works collaboratively using our visual editor
  • Live stream video directly into virtual space using Zoom, Streamyard, or OBS
  • Communicate with other gallery visitors in real time
  • Invite collaborators and build together

Technology and Community Together

  • Our toolkit has attracted a wide range of artists, educators, and curators. This community has become a hotbed of collaboration and an expanding network of talented creatives.
  • Our institutional partners gain access to a wealth of knowledge and technical resources to help smooth their transition into virtual space and enhance their ability to reach a global audience.
  • We provide consulting services for every step of the virtual curation process from concept through execution.

Teaching Tool

Originally developed as a tool for BFAs at San Jose State University to publish their BFA shows, education runs deep with New Art City. Since our founding in March 2020, over a dozen institutions around the world including UCLA, UC Berkeley, Parson's, UT Austin, UPenn, Ryerson University, SAIC, Central St. Martin's, and University of Arts London have used our toolkit for classroom collaboration, critique, and public exhibitions.

Empowering Virtual Curation

New Art City affords opportunities for artists to exhibit digital art through both virtual-first installations and virtual companions to physical exhibitions. It also allows curators to incorporate artists more directly in the curation process while expanding artists agency to curate their own work.

Our approach is community-oriented and redistributive at its core. Institutions with privilege pay for our tools and consulting services so we can offer those same resources for free to mission-aligned artists. 20% of our revenue is returned to artists through residencies, commissions, and sponsorships.

Accessibility Is Intersectional

Physical art spaces privilege those who have the means, physical ability, and geographic location to visit them. At New Art City we believe that all people should be able to experience and enjoy art, and view the internet as a tool to dissolve national boundaries. We enable users to build exhibitions that don't require expensive hardware to run, and performs on older devices with weaker connections. Moreover, our Catalog is an automatically generated, screen-reader accessible description of New Art City spaces for users who may not be able to experience a 3D exhibition. We are thoroughly committed to expanding accessibility with our tools and listening to our users to better understand how to serve them.

World Class Partners

New Art City has partnered with universities and institutions around the world to help bring their work into virtual space and expose their local communities to a global audience.

Universities New Art City has partnered with students, educators, and entire departments at universities around the world: below is a non-exhaustive list.

Institutions & Foundations

New Art City is well equipped to meet the production standards of leading institutions from a broad range of disciplines within the digital art space and beyond.

Museums and Galleries

New Art City is an excellent companion for organizations with physical spaces, allowing them to expose their work to a global audience and dramatically increase viewership.

Commissions

Our network of artists spans a staggering range of styles, disciplines, and geography and organizations commission us to bring their virtual spaces to life. We match clients with designers and we also produce exhibitions in-house. These commissions follow typical agency pricing: between 100 and 250 USD per hour, and spaces usually take between 15 and 30 hours to build. We also take "code commissions" which allow you to fund a new feature on New Art City, to make your experience unlike any that came before it.
